Frameless shower screen cost in London: what you pay for

A made-to-measure frameless shower screen is priced from its glass, its layout and the hardware that layout needs. What each part adds, and where to see the live price for your shower.

By the SW Glass workshop team· Published · 5 min read

Four things set the price of a made-to-measure frameless shower screen. There is the glass (its size, type and thickness, always toughened with polished edges), the layout you choose, the holes that layout needs, and the hardware that holds it up: hinges, U-channel, seals, wall brackets or a support bar. A raked panel under a sloping ceiling adds a rake charge. Our prices are for supply only, and fitting is separate. The configurator shows the live price for your exact layout and sizes, including VAT.

The price, line by line

Every part of the price is something you can see and change in the configurator, and this is what each one is.

The glass you pick changes the price

Each glass type and thickness has its own rate per square metre in our price book, so the choice shows straight away in the total. For shower and bath glass, clear, grey tint and bronze tint come in 8 mm or 10 mm. Satin (etched) and fluted (reeded) come in 10 mm only.

We do not make shower glass in 6 mm, and we do not put mirror in a shower. A hinged door must be 8 or 10 mm because the hinge has to grip the glass. Our help page on shower screens and enclosures shows how each glass looks and which layouts take it.

The layout decides the hardware

How many panels you buy, and what holds them, comes from the layout. A walk-in screen has no door. A single panel fixed to the wall is held by a support bar, added from 950 mm wide. A free-standing panel stands in a floor channel and is held by two support bars from above.

A hinged enclosure adds a door, its hinges and the three door seals, plus the U-channel and any wall brackets on the fixed panels beside it. A sliding enclosure uses sliding gear in place of hinges. The fixed panel with a sliding door, and the sliding door with a return, are priced online. The door between two fixed panels, two doors with two fixed panels, and the corner entry with two sliding doors are still priced by hand.

The configurator adds the hardware your layout needs, so the price you see covers the glass and the hardware together. Our page on hinges, channels and seals explains each part and the five finishes it comes in.

Where the 700 mm rule adds two holes

Our 700 mm rule decides how the fixed panels of bath screens, walk-ins and hinged enclosures are held. A fixed panel up to 700 mm wide has no holes and sits in U-channel only. At 701 mm or more it gets two holes, 200 mm from the top and 200 mm from the bottom, for two SWGC83300 wall brackets, plus the U-channel.

The rule does not apply to free-standing walk-ins, sliding enclosures, a single door between two walls, the single hinged bath panel or the folding bath screen. Holes are drilled before the glass is toughened, because toughened glass cannot be drilled afterwards, which is why they are fixed when you order.

A sloping ceiling

Every raked shower and bath job is priced online, and the live price already includes the rake. A raked corner enclosure is sold provisionally: our staff confirm the rake before cutting. Our help page on raked panels and sloping ceilings explains how to measure under the slope.

Fitting is not in the price

Our prices cover the glass and hardware only. If you need a fitter, we can introduce you to an independent, self-employed fitter. The fitting work and its contract are then between you and the fitter, who agrees the price, the date and their own guarantee with you. Our help page on finding a fitter explains how it works.

Where to go next

Pick a layout in the shower configurator and type in your sizes; the live price includes the hardware your layout needs.

Questions we get asked

Is a made-to-measure screen much dearer than off the shelf?

We cannot compare it for you without knowing the stock enclosure, but you can. Enter your sizes in the configurator for a live price, then compare like with like: the same glass type, thickness and hardware.

Do you fit, or supply only?

We supply the glass and hardware. Fitting is separate, and we can introduce you to an independent fitter who agrees the fitting price and date with you.

Is the measuring visit fee refundable?

The fee for a measuring visit comes off your next purchase from us. Our page on measuring visits explains how the credit works and what happens if a visit is cancelled.

Why does my shower order say "provisional"?

Where one of your sizes is worked out from an estimated figure, each size is labelled "(provisional)". You still see a live price and can order, but the job is held as not ready to cut until our staff confirm the specification.

Does a shower screen need to be toughened glass?

Shower enclosures are covered by BS EN 14428, and a compliant screen is toughened or laminated safety glass. Every shower and bath screen we make is toughened, 8 or 10 mm, with polished edges.

8things that change what a glass splashback costs

There is no single price for a splashback, because a splashback is made to one wall. These are the eight things that move the number, roughly in the order they move it, and where to see our live rate for the panel you actually want.
